CTI??? Daily tips??? Read the introduction to the tip #1 if you would like to have some explanations.
It is a very widespread mistake, especially when we near a deadline: we keep pushing and stretching ourselves beyond all limits, believing only following this way we can ensure we make what we want / what is required from us on time. Hoping we can enjoy a good and profound rest afterwards, once we finish.
The life, as well as the human body, does not really function like that, especially when the timeframe is multiple days and even weeks. Making some progress forward requires periods of activity, sure, and it equally requires periods of rest. It allows us to keep taking action, making things, and ensuring that we are functioning effectively, with our energies optimally renewed and restored.
So, today’s tip is to say to myself and all of you: have a rest.
Your inner voice might be quietly telling you, “You need some rest. Take a break, lay down, take it easy, stop killing yourself”… So often we (at least me) override this voice by responding, “Hey, I can’t afford it, I don’t have time for rest, I have to work now, otherwise I won’t get it done on time”…
And you know what happens so often if you keep doing it day after day, week after week? Your body pulls an emergency break. And you can consider youself lucky if symptomatically it would be just a basic cold requiring you nothing special but stay in bed for a couple of days and drink lots of water. Sometimes, your being knows that the habits of overriding this type of guidance are so strong that something like a basic cold would not make any change to your behavior, and the disease it creates to force your to stop and get some rest is much more serious.
Really, even in the timeframe of a day, our brain becomes a mess from the intense activities we engage in. If we keep pushing, our actual progress slows down significantly. Taking a 15/30/60-minute break from the work and relaxing helps the brain to clear itself, process what’s necessary passively in the background (on the backburner), and prepare for a new period of work: get back the ability to concentrate, to focus, to stay on track.
There are situations when the results indeed depend on our ability follow the constraints and keep moving forward. But more often than not, we overdo it, in the process hurting both ourselves and the results we are so much striving to produce.
Trust the inner guidance. If it is time to go forward, go forward. If you look within and discover that it’s time for a rest, have a rest.
Until next time,
Enjoy your life! ;)
