So, it is July the first, and I am preparing for my dream trip to the United States over the course of the next two weeks. Tomorrow, I take off at 8 am to Amsterdam, where I have my flight to the US in the morning of the next day.
The trigger event for the trip is the World Domination Summit that takes place in Portland, OR this weekend. This is the third year of the summit, and the size of the event is increasing rapidly. First year, WDS had five hundred attendees. Last year, there was a thousand. This year the number of us is approaching three(!!!) thousand.
Who are we? We are people who want to contribute to this world, and make it a better place. We are people who want to live differently, live the lives true to ourselves, follow our dreams and help other people at the same time. We are remarkable people.
I learned about WDS from the blogs I was following in the Summer of 2012. I looked at the summit’s website and immediately knew that I wanted to be there. I tweeted “Wish I could visit one of WDS”… and subscribed to the waiting list for the updates.
In October, I was notified that the first wave of the tickets for WDS2013 would go on sale in a few days. I did not know what to do. There was so much uncertainty. I was not sure if I would have enough money for the trip. I was not sure where in the world I would be in July… I knew nothing.
On the day of the first wave, I was in Brazil. The sales were starting during lunchtime. I probably saw them going live. Rumors stated that in the previous year the first wave of tickets sold out in ten minutes. But I was still unsure, still in doubts of the future. So I went off to have a lunch, leaving it to the Universe. When I returned to the lab, it had been almost two hours after the sale started. I checked in, and there were still available tickets. The voice inside me told me “they are waiting for YOU”. So I summoned all the courage I could and secured my place at the event.
I was in.
For the last two months (May, June) I have been very strict on money, so I could make it to the States. I checked plane ticket prices, expecting them to be around 1300 euros for my route. I did not have enough money in May, so I spent less, waiting for my monthly income. I didn’t rush to buy the tickets immediately when I received the money at the end of the month, especially given I had an extra delay caused by transferring it between accounts.
When I was going to Hamburg on June 8, I checked the available balance on the card to be used for the purchase, and it was already approaching the 1200 euros mark, significantly below the expected level of 1300. I had a panic attack :) The next day (Sunday) I went to the office, sat there, extensively searched for options, and found the best alternative to fly from/to Amsterdam. After buying the tickets, I had around 10 euros left on that card. I have checked a couple of other places and found some money to use in cash, much less than a hundred euros. And it was only June 9. It was going to be a challenging month. A very challenging one. Plus, I still had no [train] tickets to/from Amsterdam.
But I made it.
Tomorrow, I am taking off to Amsterdam. I am spending the day in the city, looking for a couch to sleep on :) In the early morning (or in the late evening, depending on whether I find a couch or not), I move to the airport and fly out. To Portland via Philadelphia. This week will be spent in Portland and at WDS. I have my return ticket on July 17th from San Francisco, but no fixed arrangements in between WDS and the flight. I intend to do a road trip from Portland to San Francisco along the coast line, and then spend several days in and around San Francisco, just discovering the area and living my dream. But we’ll see how it unfolds.
I plan to post my report on WDS next Monday (Pacific Time), but you can also keep an eye on my Twitter for more frequent updates :)
And now to you. What special event have you attended or are going to attend? What does this event mean to you? Share the story of your preparation to it in the comments below!
